Meeting author and actress Julie Andrews for first time is once in a lifetime experience

LARCHMONT — On Feb. 4, my mom, sister and I went to a bookstore here to meet Julie Andrews for the first time. We had to wait on a very long line ouside along with many others. As I approached the entrance, I could see people crying with joy and excitement. My heart pounded, and I entered a medium-sized room with my mom and sister Viviane.

You may know Julie Andrews from movies like “The Sound Of Music,” “Mary Poppins,” “Princess Diaries,” “Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement” and many more.

For this event, you had to buy a book in order to come. The book was written by Julie Andrews with her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton. The book is called “The Very Fairy Princess Follows Her Heart.” The other books in the series are “The Very Fairy Princess” and “The Very Fairy Princess Takes the Stage!” The books are beautifully illustrated by Christine Davenier.

“Hello!” Julie Andrews said with a warm smile. We watched as she signed her book. I knew I had to say something, after all I was meeting a legend. So I said, “I love your movies! Which was your favorite to act in?”

You could tell she was really taking her time with everyone because she closed her blue Sharpie and responded, “Can I ask you a question?” I nodded without taking my eyes off her. “If you had a litter of eight puppies, how could you possibly choose your favorite? You couldn’t! So I feel the same way about my movies, although I did enjoy myself very much in ‘The Sound of Music.'”

She then apologized for the long wait outside in the cold. My mom exclaimed, “Trust me, it was totally worth it!” I couldn’t have agreed more. Julie Andrews also gave some really nice compliments. “You have beautiful smiles,” she said to Viviane and I. Then she added looking at my mom, “I know where you got them from.”

Julie Andrews was very polite and an interesting person to have a conversation with, even if it was only three minutes. It was a once in a lifetime experience that I know I will never forget. If you want to read her books, I recommend you go to Voracious Readers where they have several copies of the books.
