COLONIAL SCHOOL — Whether you’re walking or bike riding to school, there are ways you can be safe, according to Mrs. Wilson.

When walking, always stay on the sidewalk, wait for the crossing guard’s signal and double check yourself, Mrs. Wilson said. Also, you can walk with a friend because there is safety in numbers, she added.

Mrs. Wilson said the idea right now is to get everyone to walk or ride every Monday. “We’re taking baby steps,” she said.

Grades 3, 4 and 5 can ride bikes to school. Here are the principal’s safety tips for bike riders:

  • Wear a helmet.
  • Listen for cars coming behind you.
  • Remember that pedestrians (people who are walking) have the right of way.
  • Get off your bike when you get to Colonial and walk to the bike rack.
  • No riding on school property.
  • Lock your bike up.
