Colonial chess team wins big at Ward Fall Scholastic Tournament

NEW ROCHELLE — The Colonial chess team dominated on Nov. 29 at the Ward Fall Scholastic Tournament at the William Ward Elementary  School.

Colonial took first place in all four divisions, and Pelham Middle School won in two others. Colonial’s Matyas Spunberg, Ryan Chang, Alexander Michailoff and Mathew Meyer won in the elementary division. These are the other schools they faced: Corpus Christi Holy Rosary, Purchase, French American School, Ward and Harrison Avenue.

“Pelham student’s results were remarkable as we took first place in every division,” said chess club teacher and coach Mike Ellenbogen. Ten students competed from Pelham Middle School, as well as one from Siwanoy, one from Hutchinson, and a pre-K player who is the younger sibling of the Hutch student.

Two first grade girls, Eleanor Neu and Larisa Breskin from class 1C, competed as the only girls from Colonial.
